A breakdown is a different job to a scheduled visit. The fault is unknown, the building is already uncomfortable, and the priority is a correct diagnosis rather than a tidy programme of work. We run reactive HVAC repairs from Newbury across West Berkshire, North Hampshire and South Oxfordshire. On arrival the engineer works the fault properly rather than swapping parts and hoping. That means checking the obvious first — power, isolators, fuses, controls, setpoints and timeclocks — then working through the system: fuel pressures and combustion readings, water pressure and flow, refrigerant pressures and superheat, electrical readings across motors, capacitors and sensors, and any fault history stored in the controller. Manufacturer fault codes are a starting point, not an answer; the same code commonly has three or four possible causes behind it, and only measurement separates them.
Heating calls follow familiar patterns. Boilers lock out on ignition faults, flame sensing, overheat stats or blocked condensate traps, and that last one accounts for a large share of the calls on the first hard frost. Low system pressure usually means a leak or a failed expansion vessel rather than a system that simply needs topping up. Radiators cold at the top point to air and cold at the bottom to sludge. Diverter valves, pumps, actuators and failed thermistors make up much of the rest, and each has a distinct signature once readings are taken.
Cooling and heat pump breakdowns split roughly into airflow, drainage, electrical and refrigerant. Blocked filters and iced coils are usually maintenance catching up with the owner, and condensate pumps and blocked drains cause most of the water damage we get called to. Where a system is short of refrigerant, that refrigerant went somewhere, so a leak has to be found and repaired rather than topped up. Under the F-Gas Regulations the operator of the equipment is legally responsible for having leaks repaired and for keeping records of what is added or recovered.
Ventilation and extract faults are quieter, and often go unreported until performance is well down. Typical causes are blinded filters raising resistance until airflow collapses, slipped or perished drive belts, worn fan bearings announcing themselves as a rumble, seized dampers, and units left on default settings after somebody reset a controller. Kitchen extract adds grease-laden ductwork and fans running out of balance. We take airflow and pressure readings rather than judging by feel, because a fan that still spins can be moving a fraction of its design volume.
Parts decide whether this is one visit or two. Fast-moving items are carried on board — pumps, fans, capacitors, contactors, sensors, thermostats, ignition components, common filters and belts — and anything beyond that is ordered through UK distribution, usually for next day. Where a fault cannot be closed out on the first visit we make the system safe, isolate what needs isolating, and confirm in writing what is required before anything is ordered. Common questions
- How quickly can you get to a breakdown?
- Calls are taken around the clock, and we aim to attend no-heat and no-cooling faults the same day across the core West Berkshire patch, reaching Reading, Basingstoke and Oxford along the A34 and M4. Realistic timing depends on the hour, what is already running and whether the fault carries a safety risk. We will give you an honest window on the phone rather than an optimistic one.
- What happens if you cannot fix it on the first visit?
- You get a diagnosis, the system left in a safe condition, and a written quote covering the parts and labour needed to finish the repair. Nothing is ordered until you have agreed it. Where the equipment can safely run in a limited or temporary way we will set that up so you have some heating or cooling meanwhile, and the return visit is booked around the part's lead time.
- Why does my air conditioning keep needing more refrigerant?
- Because it is leaking. Refrigerant is not consumed in normal running, so a system that is low has lost charge at a joint, flare, coil or valve. Topping up vents gas to atmosphere and leaves the fault in place, and under the F-Gas Regulations the operator is responsible for having leaks repaired and recorded. We trace it by pressure testing, electronic detection or dye, repair the joint, then evacuate and recharge to the stated weight.
- Will a repair affect my manufacturer warranty?
- It should not, where the work follows the manufacturer's procedure using the correct components. We fit OEM parts wherever they are available and record what was replaced, so the evidence trail stays intact. Warranty problems usually come from generic parts, undocumented work or missed servicing — most manufacturers make cover conditional on an annual service being carried out and evidenced, which is worth checking on your own paperwork.
- Is it worth repairing an old system or should I replace it?
- It depends on what has failed, what is likely to follow it, and whether parts still exist. A pump, fan, sensor or actuator on an otherwise sound unit is usually worth fixing. A failed compressor, a corroded heat exchanger or an obsolete control board on ageing equipment often is not, because the next failure tends to be close behind. We set out both routes and what each realistically buys you in remaining service life.
- Do you repair equipment you did not install, and other manufacturers' makes?
- Yes. Most reactive work we attend is on systems installed by somebody else, often with no records left behind. Where documentation is missing we take the data plate details, note the refrigerant type and charge, and start an asset record on the first visit so the next engineer is not working blind. If a system turns out to be genuinely unsupported, we will tell you that rather than chase unobtainable parts.
